Die gebürtige Japanerin begann ihre musikalische Ausbildung im Alter von drei Jahren. Beim Competition for Young Artists in Japan erhielt sie eine 1. Preis und wurde mit dem renommierten Musikpreis aller Kategorien der größten japanischen Tageszeitung Asahi Shimbun ausgezeichnet. Nach ihrem Studium an der Toho School of Music in Tokio in der Solistenklasse von Koichiro Harada (dem Gründer und erstem Geiger des Tokyo String Quartetts), trat sie als Solistin mit zahlreichen Orchestern (u.a. dem auf Century Philharmonic Orchestra, dem Hyogo Symphony Orchestra und dem Heemstede Philharmonic Orchestra in Holland) auf und gewann im Jahr 2000 den großen 1. Preis beim Osaka International Music Competition.
Internationale Musikfestivals in Europa und den USA (etwa in Lenk, Aspen, Santa Fe und La Jolla) und insbesondere die International Holland Music Session, boten Sae Shimabara die Möglichkeit mit Musikern aus aller Welt zu musizieren. So spielte sie beispielsweise als „Rising Star“ mit Carter Brey – dem Solocellisten der New York Philharmonic. Bestrebt die faszinierende Vielfalt musikalischer Interpretationen und Ausdrucksweisen kennenzulernen, nahm sie an Meisterkursen bekannter Geiger wie Zhakar Bron, Pinchas Zukerman und Herman Krebbers teil, und setzte schließlich im Jahr 2000 – unterstützt durch ein Stipendium der Rohm Music Foundation – ihr Studium in der Meisterklasse von Ana Chumachenco an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater in München fort.
Im Jahr 2003 wurde sie erste Geigerin der Sächsischen Staatskapelle Dresden – als erstes asiatisches Mitglied. Seit 2012 unterrichtet sie im Rahmen eines Lehrauftrages im Fach Violine an der Musikhochschule in Dresden.

相愛子供音楽教室、兵庫県立西宮高等学校音楽科、桐朋学園大学ソリスト・ディプロマコースをそれぞれ卒業。加納千春、東儀幸、田村千恵子、原田幸一郎各氏に師事。
在学中はザハール・ブロン、P.ズッカーマン、H.クレバース各氏、またグァルネリ、イザイ、アマティ各弦楽四重奏団等、多くのマスタークラスを受講。
大阪国際音楽コンクール第一位をはじめ数々のコンクールに優勝。その将来性を評価され兵庫県より「坂井時忠音楽賞」を受賞。また大阪センチュリー交響楽団、オランダ・ヘームステッド・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団など様々なオーケストラと共演。アメリカ・アスペン音楽祭、オランダ・ミュージックセッション、パブロ・カザルス国際音楽祭、レンク国際音楽アカデミー、インターナショナル・ヒンデミット・フェスティヴァル等、数々の国内外演奏会に出演。中でもアメリカ・サンタフェ、ラホヤ両音楽祭では「ライジング・スター」として招かれ、ニューヨークフィル首席ソロ・チェロ奏者カーター・ブレイ氏と共演し現地誌にて好評を博した。
海外での演奏経験を積み重ねていくうちに留学を熱望するようになり、2000年ロームミュージックファンデーションより助成を受け、ドイツ、ミュンヘン国立音楽大学大学院に留学。ユリア・フィッシャーをはじめ多くのヴァイオリニストを生み出した名教授アナ・チュマチェンコ氏に師事。ここでの研鑽が後の人生に大きな影響を与え、 ドイツ音楽を中心にヨーロッパの伝統奏法を徹底的に学ぶことになる。2002年国家演奏家資格を取得し同音楽院最高課程（マイスターコース）卒業。
そして2003年世界最古のオーケストラの一つ、名門ドレスデン国立歌劇場管弦楽団（シュターツカペレ・ドレスデン）第一ヴァイオリン奏者となる。 これは460年余の楽団創立以来、初の東洋人入団という歴史的快挙となった。 カールマリア・フォン・ウェーバー、リヒャルト・ワーグナー、リヒャルト・シュトラウスなど、様々な大家が指揮をとり、次々と自作を初演していったこの楽団は、 その伝統を守り受け継ぐ楽団として世界に名高い。その後シュターツカペレ歴代多くのヴァイオリン奏者を生み出した巨匠故ラインハルト・ウルブリヒト氏の教えを受け伝統的奏法を享受する。 批評では常に「豊麗な音色」「ベルベットのようなタッチの音色」「いぶし銀の音色」など、その伝統を受け継ぐ、深く温かい音色が手放しに評価される。
現在は演奏活動のほか、2012年より若い世代へ伝統を伝えようとドレスデン国立音楽大学（カール・マリア・フォン・ウェーバー・ドレスデン）にて後進の指導にもあたっている。

2008年に創立460周年を迎えたドレスデン・シュターツカペレは、世界最古のオーケストラのひとつであり、豊かな伝統を誇る。長きに渡る歴史の中で、数多くの優れた指揮者と国際的に著名な演奏家たちが、このかつての宮廷楽団に足跡を残してきた。歴代の音楽監督にはハインリヒ・シュッツ、カール・マリア・フォン・ウェーバー、そしてこの楽団を彼の「奇跡のハープ」と呼んだリヒャルト・ワーグナーがその名を連ねている。中でもリヒャルト・シュトラウスと同楽団は、60年以上にわたって密接なかかわりを持っていた。《ばらの騎士》を含むシュトラウスの9つのオペラがドレスデンで初演されており、《アルプス交響曲》は同楽団に献呈。他にも多数の著名な作曲家による作品が、同楽団によって初演され、献呈されている。 世界で最も知られる人気の高いオーケストラのひとつとして、世界中の主要音楽都市を訪れ定期的に演奏。 2013年からはザルツブルク・イースター音楽祭の芸術監督を務めるクリスティアン・ティーレマンとともに、同団は音楽祭の音楽的バックボーンを構成している。 2007年、ブリュッセルにて同楽団は「世界の音楽遺産の保存のためのヨーロッパ文化財団賞」を受賞した初の、そしてこれまでのところ唯一のオーケストラである。2013年 オペラ専門誌『オーパングラス』が選定する「今年のオーケストラ賞」を受賞。
The Japanese violinist Sae Shimabara started her musical education at the age of three. Already at a young age, her musical talent became recognized when she won the 1st prize at the 3rd Competition for Young Artists in Japan. During that competition, she was also awarded with the prestigious Asahi Shimbun Music Prize – an award of Japan`s largest newspaper for the best perfomance in all categories.
After graduating from the Toho School of Music in Tokyo, where she studied in the Solist Diploma Course of Koichiro Harada (founder and 1st violinist of the Tokyo String Quartett), she performed at Japanese festivals including the International Hindemith Festival and with major Japanese orchestras, such as the Century Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hyogo Symphony Orchestra. As a soloist, Sae Shimabara has a long-lasting connection to the Heemstede Philharmonic Orchestra from the Netherlands. In addition, she performed at various international festivals, such as the Aspen Music Festival, the Casals Music Festival, and the Lenk Music Festival. As a special honor, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and the La Jolla Music Festival invited her to play in the USA as a „Rising star“ with Carter Brey – the principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic.
As a young Japanese violinist, Sae Shimabara was fascinated by the numerous possibilities and different cultures to express her passion for music.One of the fortunate events for her was the Holland Music Session. It enabled her to play music in the cultural environment that once was home of her favorite composers, where her desire to study in Europe started. Motivated by this, she took master classes with famous violinists such as Zakhar Bron, Pinchas Zukerman, Herman Krebbers.
In 2000, she won the 1st prize (Grand Prix) at the Osaka International Music Competition. Then in 2001 – supported by a scholarship of the „Rohm Music Foundation“ – she finally moved to Munich (Germany) where she studied at the “Hochschule für Musik und Theater” in the violin class of Prof. Ana Chumachenco – a selected class of violinists of international reputation such as Julia Fischer, Arabella Steinbacher or Lisa Batiashvili.
After being awarded with the Meisterklassendiplom (master class diploma), she became the first Asian member of the “Staatskapelle Dresden” – the orchestra of the “Semperoper” that Richard Wagner once called »his miraculous harp« and which is today lead by Christian Thielemann. Since 2003, Sae Shimabara is a first violinist of the ensemble, which is one of the oldest orchestras in the world and immersed in tradition. The fact that many distinguished conductors and internationally celebrated instrumentalists have left their marks on this orchestra in the almost 500 years of its existence, is an inspiring source of knowledge and motivation for Sae Shimabara – an experience that she enjoys to share with the students in her violin class at the “Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber” Dresden where she teaches since 2012.
